a brief interview with "ZORROS PETARDOS SALVAJES" [Argentina]
You like the gnarled FUZZsounds ala` Davie Allan mixed with some fresh surfguitars ? "ZORROS PETARDOS SALVAJES" is an instrumental Fuzz Crew from argentina makin its rounds in the scene since years. They released several independent CDs and participated in various compilations. Their newest album is called „INSTROMÖTOR/FÜZZRIDERS“....time to ask the guitar player and head of the combo El Jevi a few questions via mail. Here it goes...
TES: What does the name of your band means ? Is there any special story about Zorros Petardos Salvajes ?
ZPS: Dont mean anything in particular. In the begining we were called „The Petardos“ [„Los Petardos“].
After a show someone told us that we „play like wilds“, so our name changed into „Los Petardos Salvajes“. I don`t remember where „zorros“ came from...
TES: How did you come together ? How long do you play together as Zorros Petardos Salvajes ?
ZPS: I started the band together with my friend Zorro A in our early High School years. As instrumentation we used a guitar and an indian drum. Later we decide to pick up a real drummer for the band and became a trio with Gato Salvaje on drums and Zorro A and me [Jevi] on guitar.

TES: Who are the men behind " Zorros Petardos Salvajes " ? Who plays what ?
ZPS: Our recent line up is: Killer Guitar - El Jevi Petardo [The Böss], Fuzz Guitar - Zorro A, Jointbass- Dirty Ernie, Drums – El Torte.

TES: What instruments/gear do you use ?
ZPS: All custom instruments. Zorro A – uses a „Faim“ [Argentine Guitar] Model Vox Phantom, Dirty Ernie uses a „Johnson Stone Bass“ [kinda Jazz Master made in Bs As], El Torte uses Yamaha Drums and I play a „Fender Talon“ guitar & [soon] a Hallmark guitar [selfmade].

TES: It seems that your sound is influenced by various artists and bands like Davie Allan, Dick Dale or Motörhead. Who else influenced your style ?
ZPS: Ouuuu....it is too much too name in one list ! We love the music ... we breath it ! The Ventures, The Cramps, The Shadows, The Hollies, Shakers, Takeshi Terauchi, Horacio Ascheri, Van Halen, The Cult, The Fuzztones, Freddy King, Budgie, Black Sabbath, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Kinks....the list is long...
On one day we hear MC5 or Captain Beefheart and the day after Eddie and the hot rods. I also like Jazz or Dixieland...simply everything that touches my senses.
TES: Why do you decide to play instrumental rock`n`roll music ? Do you have any vocal songs too ?
ZPS: Because the MUSIC comes first. We play some cover versions from time to time.
TES: Who writes all the original „Zooros Petardos Salvajes“ songs ?
ZPS: I have most of the ideas for the songs. But we are always finishing the songs togehter.

TES: Your discographie is real long... which is your favourite release ?
ZPS: All the Z.P.S. Cd`s are independent relases and are sold at shows or by mail. Two songs were released on compilations [Golly Gee Records and Isotonic Records]. Our favourite CD is our latest – „INSTROMÖTOR/FÜZZRIDERS“.
TES: Can you tell me something about the guy who did the awesome cover artwork for your „Füzzriders | Inströmotor“ release ?
ZPS: Well here I go again. One more time it`s me. I`m always drawing and so I decided to start doing it in the rockstyle, including drawing flyers for shows and preparing the coverartwork for CDs. I do this also friends or other labels. If you`re interested please contact me: Jaxvmp@yahoo.com.ar.

TES: Where can we buy all the ZPS releases ?
ZPS: The „PSYCHODELICS“ CD [our experimental work] was released by Mandarinas Records . The other 2 compilation releases can be brought at Isotonic Records and Golly Gee Records . For buying the other Z.P.S. CDs please contact Jaxvmp@yahoo.com.ar.
TES: Do you often play live ?
ZPS: We played about more than 150 times. Our country dont care much about the music, so doing a whole tour is too difficult. If we save some money, we willl touring our neighbour country Chile this year maybe.

TES: What is your favourite drink ?
ZPS: WINE. Good wine...and good beer .
TES: What are your plans for the future ?
ZPS: Continue to play, record a new album, make a video and hopefully visit some places to ROCK !!!!

TES: Do you think that the argentine soccer team will win the world championship in 2006 ?
ZPS: I really don`t care about soccer...
